If you’re passionate about helping maintain the security of the KARRATco ecosystem, this is your chance. The following post is the Nomination Announcement for the KARRATco Security Council positions for the term beginning on August 1, 2025, for a term of 12 months. This announcement marks the start of the Security Council nomination process. Per the KARRATco Constitution and KIP-13, this post will cover everything you need to know about:
- Security Council responsibilities
- General elections housekeeping (e.g. where things live on Discourse)
- Details and timeline regarding the nomination and election process
- The application process and how to apply to become a Security Council member
- Nomination profile, to be posted publicly on Discourse Forum
What You’ll Be Doing
The Security Council is a committee of 3 members who are signers of a multi-sig wallet, which has powers to perform certain Emergency Actions and Non-Emergency Actions, as delegated to it by the KARRATco and Karrat Foundation, and is responsible for upholding this KARRATco Constitution. Through the submission, approval and implementation of a Constitutional KIP, the KARRATco is able to modify the Security Council’s powers.
Emergency Actions:
The Security Council has the power to execute any software upgrade or perform other required actions with no delay in order to respond to a security emergency, should one arise (such actions, “Emergency Actions”). Performing any Emergency Action requires a 2-of-3 approval from the Security Council. The Security Council must not use its power to perform Emergency Actions except in a true security emergency, such as a critical vulnerability that could significantly compromise the integrity, confidentiality, or security of the KARRAT Protocol or KARRATco.
After performing any Emergency Action, the Security Council must issue a full transparency report (at an appropriate time after the security emergency has passed) to explain what was done and why such Emergency Action was justified.
Non-Emergency Actions:
The Security Council may also approve and implement routine software upgrades, routine maintenance and other parameter adjustments in a non-emergency setting (such actions, “Non-Emergency Actions”), which require a 2-of-3 approval in order to take effect. Any Non-Emergency Action, after approval by the Security Council, will bypass Phases 1 to 4 of the KIP Process and instead directly go through Phase 5 of the KIP Process. The Security Council may optionally specify additional delays before deployment.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience (5+ years preferred) with web3 security protocols.
- Familiarity with blockchain ecosystems like L1s/L2s/L3s, NFTs, DAOs, DeFi, and token-based economies.
- Understanding of smart contracts and dApp ecosystems
Housekeeping
There is a category on Discourse called Security Council Elections. This is where election resources will live. Within this category, there are three sub-categories:
- Announcements
- This contains high-level nomination and election announcements for the election cycle.
- Nominees
- This sub-category is where the community will be able to engage with, ask questions of, and seek clarification from active nominees on their nomination profile pages.
- Rejected/Withdrawn Nominations
- Any application that is withdrawn by the applicant, rejected by a community vote (at either the nomination or election stage) or withdrawn for any other reason will be moved here.
The Nomination and Elections Process
- Step 1: KIP Approval - This election process was ratified by the passing of KIP-13 at DAO vote on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025.
- Step 2: Collection of Potential Contenders - Starting June 23, applicants are invited to put themselves forward for the Security Council and must post a formal declaration of interest. To declare interest in being a Security Council member for the Karrat Foundation, a person must comment on this Discourse post “I have interest in being a Security Council Member for the Karrat Foundation”, and nominee profiles will be posted to the Nominees subcategory of the Security Council Elections category here on Discourse.
- Step 3: Snapshot Vote to Advance to Candidacy - A formal Snapshot vote will be posted and open for seven days. The top six vote-getters will move forward to Step 5, pending KYC verification by the Karrat Foundation.
- Step 4: KYC Verification - The top six vote-getters must complete KYC through the Karrat Foundation. During this phase, candidates must also provide a wallet address that belongs to them and exclusively holds at least 100,000 KARRAT. If a contender fails KYC, the next highest vote recipient will take their place. Step 5 will not begin until six verified candidates are confirmed.
- Step 5: Final Snapshot Vote - A second Snapshot vote will be posted and remain open for seven days. The top three candidates, receiving the most votes, will be elected. If fewer than three candidates get votes, sitting Council members will remain in place until the next election at the Karrat Foundation’s discretion.
- Step 6: Installation - After a seven-day timelock period, the newly elected Security Council members will be installed via the on-chain governance contracts.
This election will run on Snapshot as a one-time exception while our long-term on-chain voting platform is being implemented on WinVote. This cycle will ultimately elect 3 candidates to the Security Council.
